Travel Industry Association Reveals Air Travel Survey

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Thursday, May 29, 2008 – Roger J. Dow, President and CEO of Travel Industry Association announces that the TIA released a landmark survey revealing that deep frustration among air travelers caused them to avoid an estimated 41 million trips over the past 12 months at a cost of more than $26 billion to the U.S. economy.  Air travelers’ primary concerns are delays (largely due to an antiquated air traffic control system) and inefficient security screening.  The research also demonstrated that air travelers express little optimism for positive change, with nearly 50 percent saying that the air travel system is not likely to improve in the near future.

This research, which was conducted with more than 1,000 adults who had taken at least one roundtrip by air in the last 12 months, should be a wake up call to America’s policy leaders that the time for meaningful air system reform is now.  More than 100,000 travelers each day are voting with their wallets by choosing to avoid trips.

The 41 million avoided trips during the last 12 months rippled outward across the entire travel community costing airlines more than $9 billion in revenue; hotels nearly $6 billion and restaurants more than $3 billion.  In addition, federal, state and local governments lost more than $4 billion in tax revenue because of reduced spending by travelers.

With rising fuel prices already weighing heavily on American pocketbooks, we need to find ways to encourage Americans to continue their business and leisure travel.  In recent weeks, TIA has distributed two email newsletters citing research and data on the benefits of travel.  I encourage you to promote and share this information broadly.  It can be found at www.TIA.org/Benefits.  This initiative will become a cornerstone of TIA’s activities in the months and years ahead.

TIA will host an emergency summit of travel leaders on June 17 in Washington, D.C., to discuss next steps for moving the air travel issue forward with policymakers.  In addition, TIA has called on each of the major presidential candidates to commit to addressing the issue for the millions of American air travelers – and voters – who face the trials of the antiquated air traffic system on a daily basis and to issue a comprehensive plan to fix major elements of the air travel system during their first term in office.  Air travel reform is an issue suffering from a lack of leadership – TIA is working to fill that void.

Costs, Variety make RVs a good deal for families

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

While gas prices have made it more expensive to take road trips in any kind of vehicle, RVs do come in many different models and sizes — from truck campers and towable trailers to motor homes and even sport utility RVs. There’s one for every budget and family type. Winnebago Industries Inc., the largest maker of motor homes, unveiled a 2009 ERA (a class-B motor home model) that gets 22 miles per gallon, while the largest motor homes get about eight miles per gallon, according to industry data.

Courtney Robey, public relations manager for the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association, says RVs can also be a good deal for families. Despite gas costs, “a family of four can travel much more cheaply in an RV than by flying, where you’d have to buy four tickets. And you’re not going to be eating out at restaurants three times a day. You’re going to be cooking in the RV. You also don’t have to pay for a hotel room. So a family can save money in the long run.”

RV dealers and rental companies are not going to hand you the keys without some preparation. I rented an RV for the first time last summer, and I didn’t head out on vacation not knowing what I was doing. A tutorial before you drive the RV off the lot is the norm.

Entrepreneurship is an Art See the Business World Creatively

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

May 21, 2008- “It is a great time to be a business entrepreneur” says Sandra Bate, President/CEO of Bates International Motor Home Rental Systems, Inc.

It’s all about thinking creatively and seeing business as an art.  The bottom line, in art or in business it comes down to visualizing the world in a different light.

Creative minds will always find ways to make a business flourish.  America remains the land of opportunity. There is never a lousy time to dream big and make those dreams reality.

Entrepreneurs frequently discover innovative solutions. They find ways to improve business and to deliver an excellent product or service. Entrepreneurial minds think creatively in all economic conditions.  They are aware that good ideas are recession-proof.

Despite Fuel Costs, Traveling in RVs Expected To Be Strong In 2008

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Chances are good you’ve made plans for road trips in an RV.  Those who own or rent RVs plan to use them this summer regardless of the price at the pump. A recent survey of current RV owners conducted by the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association revealed that 93 percent of RV owners intend to use their RVs at least as much this spring and summer as in 2007. In fact, of the 16 summer weekends this year, nearly 50 percent of all RV’ers will spend half of these weekends traveling in their RVs. And of the 93 days of summer, 63 percent will spend at least 21 days in their vehicles. But the real indication of the RV trend is that RV rental bookings are up an impressive 20 percent between Memorial Day-Labor Day compared to 2007.

The reasons for this have a lot to do with the weakness of the U.S. dollar and higher airline fares and hotel rates. RV’ers get to travel closer to home, they don’t have to buy airline tickets, check in or out of hotel rooms or eat out every night. Everything being relative, a family of four can affordably rent an RV and travel much less expensively than flying and staying in hotels.  Another revealing statistic: These campgrounds are filling up.

So what’s the breaking point? The psychographics of RV-ing seem to indicate that RV’ers would sooner give up new clothes and dining out before they abandon their RVs. RV owners may be spending as much time in their RVs — perhaps even more time — than last year.

National Parks are my therapy, heritage and inspiration.

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Audrey Peterman, a publisher of Pickup & Go has rented RVs from Bates International Motor Home Rental Systems, Inc. and here is an article of one of her trips.

Having lived in Florida for many years and regularly visiting Biscayne and Everglades national parks, I headed out to drink in the clear blue vistas of Biscayne and the infinite saw-grass marshes at Everglades.  The views, the serenity, the wildlife going about their business as they have for millennia, restored my spirit and helped me regain my serenity.

I flew to El Paso, TX on a long- awaited birding trip to Big Bend National Park, a three-and-a-half hour ride from the airport.  En route, we visited For Davis National Historic Site, home to troops of “Buffalo Soldiers” from 1867-1885.  Since I’d learned about this park it had taken on almost mythical proportions in my mind.

Arriving on the banks of the Rio Grande River, the bird enthusiasts among us immediately went wild, as we spotted one amazingly beautiful kind of bird after another.  Several spouses were new to birding, but soon got into the spirit once they saw the intensely crimson Vermilion Flycatcher, its neon chest flashing in the sun as it dipped and dived catching breakfast.  When we saw the Painted Bunting, with its purple head, green wings, yellow back and red breast, it was all over for me.  Add to that a daylong hike up to the mountain pinnacles, down around and over and back down them in a nine-and-a-half mile trip of stunning views, amazing birds and even a sighting of the rare Colima warbler, and we left the park spent and happy.  I have to say, Wallace Stegner got it right:  The National Parks are the best idea America ever had!

On your next trip, to say the National Parks or anywhere in the U.S., rent an RV from Bates International Motor Home Rental Systems, Inc. it will help make your adventure a memorable experience.  Lastly, with Bates RV rental franchises all across the U.S. it will make it a convenient experience also.
